Pirates split doubleheader with Modesto
COSTA MESA -- The Orange Coast College baseball team had a mixed bag of results on Tuesday as the Pirates split a doubleheader with visiting Modesto Junior College, taking the opener 3-0 before dropping the nightcap, 10-2.
In the game 1-win, the story of the game was starting pitcher Sullivan Spivey, who blanked the MJC Pirates with a three-hit shutout over 4 2/3 innings of the seven-inning game. The freshman righty walked two and struck out seven.
Relievers Alex Gelb and Keith Aguilar (second save) combined to hold Modesto scoreless over the final 2/13 innings on just one hit with three strikeouts.
Modesto starter Kannon Sharpe deserved a better fate, holding OCC to no earned runs over five innings with seven strikeouts, but a costly error in the second paved the way for a three-run inning for Coast and that proved to be the difference.
In that frame, Zach Boynton walked and went to second on a bunt single by Keith Aguilar. Gyubeen Kim sacrifice bunted both runners over and the throw pulled the first baseman off the bag, loading the bases with nobody out.
After a strikeout, Nathan Valencia was hit by a pitch to score the game's first run and two batters later, Devin Rogers delivered a clutch, two-out, two-run single to left, scoring Kim and Aguilar to make it 3-0.
Aguilar went 2-for-2 with a run scored and earned the save in the seventh for OCC.
Modesto returned the favor in the nightcap with a 10-2 win over Coast. Starter Tyler Looney pitched six shutout innings, allowing just two hits, no walks and seven strikeouts. Coast was held to three hits for the game.
Game 3 of this week's three-game series takes place on Wednesday at OCC, beginning at 12 p.m.
