Pirates pick up first win with 11-6 victory over Cougars

COSTA MESA -- A big, collective exhale was released from John Altobelli Park as the OCC baseball team picked up win No. 1 of the 2025 season with an 11-6 nonconference win over College of the Canyons on Wednesday.

After a trio of frustrating losses to El Camino, the Pirates found their groove against the Cougars, both on the mound and with the bats.

Coast turned a 2-1 lead into a much more comfortable advantage, thanks to a six-run fourth inning, putting the Pirates up 8-1. In the first "mindless stat of the game" for 2025, the OCC trio of Lou Fujiwara, Tyler Arevalos and Flynn Barnes had consecutive, bases-loaded, hit-by-pitches for the first three runs of that pivotal fourth inning. But Tyler Covington drove in the final three runs of that six-run frame the more conventional way ... with his bat, clearing the bases with three-run double to left-center.

Covington paced OCC's offensive outburst by going 3-for-5 with three RBI, while Kael Corridan also provided three hits to go along with two runs scored and an RBI. Barnes went 2-for-4 with two runs and an RBI, while Luke Flinn added two hits, a run and two RBI.

That was plenty of offense for sophomore righty Parker King, who silenced the bats of the Cougars over six innings of work, allowing just one run on three hits with a walk and four strikeouts.

The Pirates will look for two in a row on Thursday at home against Palomar College, beginning at 1 p.m.
