Pirates push Hawks to limit before falling in OT

COSTA MESA -- The Orange Coast College men's basketball team gave one of the top teams in the Orange Empire Conference a bit of a scare on Wednesday night, but the Pirates fell short in overtime and lost to visiting Santiago Canyon, 75-68, inside the Peterson Gym.

Isaiah Lee came off the bench and provided a strong game for the Pirates (9-11, 3-5 in the OEC), leading the team with 19 points. Timothy Bahadoor added 15 points, four rebounds and three assists, while Cody Aquino added 13 points. Mitchell Rawlins anchored the rebounding chores for OCC with a game-high 11 boards, while the duo of reserves Josh Govett and Zach Jones combined for 17 points, 13 rebounds and five assists.

For the Hawks (15-5, 6-2), Tony Colley led the way with 19 points and 11 rebounds, while Joey Longo equalled Colley's double-double effort with 15 points and 15 rebounds.

Both teams stayed close to one another throughout the contest. Both teams had 31-point first and second halves of production, but in the OT, Coast went just 1-of-9 from the floor, while the Hawks made 4-of-6 to prevail down the stretch.

With 2 minutes left, a Bahadoor free throw tied the game at 62 and from there, both teams had several chances to grab the lead and potentially win the game in regulation, but the shots weren't falling on either side. A missed layup in the final seconds from Longo and a missed put-back shot attempt in the final seconds of regulation by Chico Lopez sent the game into overtime.

In the extra session, Colley drained a 3-pointer early, putting the Hawks up 65-62, kicking off a 7-0 run that the Pirates could not recover from.

The Pirates will return to action on Friday at home against Irvine Valley, beginning at 5 p.m. (TICKETS)
