Men's Crew picks up several wins on Saturday

Last Saturday, Coast Crews posted stellar results in a regatta with UC Irvine, San Diego State, and Loyola Marymount.  In the four races run on a clear, glassy calm morning, all OCC eights rowed to open water victories in their events.

In the Varsity eights, Coast and UCI fought a hard battle, blasting off the start line dead even with each other, and with SDSU close behind.  At 600 meters into the race, UCI pushed their bow out in front, before the Coast Varsity battled back to even it up by the 1000 meter mark.  Passing the Coast Boathouse at 1200 meters, OCC had a 4 seat lead, which they slowly worked into an open water, 4-second lead at the finish.  This was the first victory for Coast's new Empacher racing shell, the Joseph M. Thomas.
In the 2nd Varsity event, Coast's Novice Eight, comprised of first year collegiate oarsmen, faced the UCI and SDSU 2nd Varsity eights.  Our Novices quickly opened an 8-seat lead over the other two boats off the start, and then held off repeated challenges to finish one length up on UCI, and a length and a half over SDSU.

The 3rd Varsity event was a mix of 3V eights from OCC, UCI, and SDSU, as well as San Diego's Novice eight, and LMU's 2nd Varsity eight.  The 5-boat event started fast, with Coast, Irvine, and San Diego Novices racing side-by-side for the first 500 meters.  Slowly Coast and Irvine pushed out into the lead, with Coast working into an 8-seat lead by the half way point.  In the second half of the race, Coast extended that to a 10-second advantage, and won by about 3 lengths over Irvine and San Diego.

In the 2nd Novice event, OCC blasted off the line and quickly opened a commanding lead over San Diego State.  They settled in to their race pace, and continued to open the margin over the entire course, to finish with a 32-second advantage.

UCLA Dual Race this Saturday, March 21

This Saturday morning, we will host the UCLA Bruins here on our home course in Newport Harbor. These dual races will be interspersed with the Berg Cup, a Women's Collegiate Regatta hosted by the OCC Women's Crew.  The exact schedule has not been worked out yet, but I will send out the schedule via email as soon as we have it.

Parking / Spectating

The best spectating for races on our home course is at the boathouse at 1801 West Coast Hwy, Newport Beach, 92663.  As has been the norm all year however, parking at the boathouse is extremely limited due to highway construction, and to scheduled sailing classes beginning at 9:00 am.

The best place to park is in a free public lot behind the "Jack Shrimp" and "Garlic Jo's" restaurants, about 250 meters west of the boathouse on Pacific Coast Highway. Click here for a map & directions to the lot, and allow about 15 minutes to walk to the boathouse.

Note:  Please do not park in the Boy Scout Sea Base parking lot next to the OCC Boathouse, or in the lot behind the shopping center between Tustin and Riverside Avenues.  These are tow-away zones, and are rigorously enforced!
