Men's Crew fares well at San Diego Crew Classic
Last weekend, crews from around the country gathered in San Diego for the annual Crew Classic regatta, and Coast posted solid results against the other four-year programs.
In the Cal Cup Varsity eight event, Coast placed fifth out of 19 schools. They had a tremendous race in the heats, leading #2 ranked Santa Clara up until the final strokes, before being overtaken by .18 of a second for first place. In the Grand Final, the Pirates got off to a shaky start, but once they settled down after about 800 meters, were able to row through UC San Diego for a fifth place finish. As this team gains more experience, we are optimistic that we will see steady speed improvement over the next eight weeks of the season.
Our Third Varsity entry rowed a very good race in their final, and placed fourth behind Stanford, USD, and UCSD. They were the top of the three non-funded "club" programs, defeating Santa Barbara and San Diego State.
In our final event of the day, our 2nd Novice Eight triumphed over a field of six other teams to win the Men's Collegiate Novice B event. They rowed a tough, side-by-side race against Santa Barbara until UCSB caught a crab in the choppy water in the third 500 meters of the race. This is a common danger for 2nd Novices, and our team handled the chop beautifully to win by 11 seconds over the Cal Lightweights.
