Men's crew sweeps past UCLA in all four races!

The four Coast Crews turned in stellar results again last Saturday against UCLA at the annual OCC/UCLA dual meet.  Raced under cloudy skies on Newport Harbor, the Pirate crews took all four of the events, winning by good margins.  The teams raced well, and feel confident going into our first major regatta of the spring next weekend, the San Diego Crew Classic in Mission Bay.

The Second Novice Eight of Joshua Wills-King, Barry Ballard, Ryan Hernandez, Makana Darval-Chang, Chad Kessloff, Maxwell Hadden, Dominik Tortes, Ivan Mendez, and coxswain Claire Harbutt set the tone by starting fast,  never looking back, and finishing their race with a comfortable margin.

The Novice Eight, rowed by Garinn Morton, Jacob Studer, Mikel Berasaluce , Aria Azadi, David Ulicki, Lorenzo Salvio, Logan Atkeson, Danny McNamara and coxswain Chase Wray followed that performance with another strong start, before settling into a strong race pace, and ultimately finishing almost 30 seconds ahead of the Bruins.

The Varsity Eights lined up next, with Weston Cole, Logan Carter, Mike Russell, Ian Wright, Jesse Robello, Dylan Goodman, Nick Inserra, and Max Yanovskiy manning the oars, and Carly San Filippo at the helm.  Both crews got off to a fast start, with Coast pulling out to a half boat length lead by the 700 meter mark.  Then, they slowly worked away from the Bruins, finishing by 2 lengths, posting a sub-6 minute time for the 2000 meter course.

Last up, the Second Varsity Eight capped off the day with another commanding win. Oarsmen Arnold Zinovyev, Ben Williams, Ryan Kolling, Andrei Ianitchii, Matt Kouyoumdjian, Mason Rosenau, Grant Coultrup, Michael Harris and coxswain Makenna Flotron executed a clean start in the choppy conditions, and quickly rowed out to a large lead, going wire to wire for the win.

The Pirates will return to action at the San Diego Crew Classic on Saturday down at Mission Bay.
