Coast sweeps the field at UCLA Classic
MARINA DEL REY -- The Orange Coast College men's crew set the pace from start to finish at the 2018 UCLA Classic, held at the Marina Aquatic Center, on Saturday.
In the grand final of the Varsity 8 race, the Pirates jumped out to an early lead and never looked back, winning the 2,000-meter race with a time of 6 minutes, 20.12 seconds, over four seconds ahead of runner-up UC Irvine (6:24.79) and over five seconds up on the UCLA "A" boat (6:25.14).
Coast's "A" boat qualified for the grand final in the Novice 8 race and the Pirates did not disappoint, cruising to an 18-second victory with a time of 6:30.79, ahead of UCI (6:48.71), UCLA "A" (7:01.03) and UCI "B" (7:09.59). OCC's "B" boat raced in the petite final and topped everyone with a time of 6:37, with the University of Oregon taking second (6:46.39) and the University of Colorado (6:53.74) placing third.
"This was the first time this regatta has been run in 30 years and OCC won both events by open water," Pirate head coach Cam Brown said. "I was most pleased with the great racing experience gained by all crews with 2-3 races in a four-hour span for each boat."
OCC will return to action on April 14, taking on UC Irvine for the Collins Cup, inside Newport Harbor, beginning at 7 a.m.
