Pirates go 4-for-4 over UCI to claim Collins Cup
NEWPORT BEACH -- The Orange Coast College men's crew took on UC Irvine in four races and the Pirates finished the morning with four first-place performances at the 2018 Collins Cup on Saturday on the Newport Harbor.
The Pirates opened the victory run with the Varsity 4 race and posted a 1-2 finish in the shortened 2,000-meter race, taking the top spot with a time of 5 minutes, 44.2 seconds, with OCC's B boat taking second at 5:45.6. UCI (5:54.4) was a distant third.
In the Second Novice 8 race, Coast jumped out early and earned an open-water victory with a time of 6:26.3, 14 seconds ahead of the Anteaters (6:40.4).
Up next came the Novice 8 race and again, it was an open-water victory for the Pirates, thanks to a winning time 6:02.3, 14 seconds up on the UCI boat (6:16.2).
In the finale, the Varsity 8 race was a bit closer, but the result was still the same ... an open water victory for the Pirates, who crossed the line with Collins Cup-winning time of 5:51.3, nine seconds up on UCI's time of 6:00.4.
"This is always a fun regatta as we see UC Irvine on the Harbor every morning during practice," OCC head coach Cam Brown said. "It was great to see another solid performance across the squad with strong results in every event and it is great to have the Collins Cup back at our boathouse."
Up next for the Pirates is the Western Intercollegiate Rowing Association (WIRA) Championships in Sacramento, on April 28-29 on Lake Natoma.
