Novice boats dominate field at WIRA Championships

SACRAMENTO -- The Orange Coast College men's crew witnessed some big highs and one painful low at the 2018 Western Intercollegiate Rowing Championships last weekend as the Pirates took on the best of the best in the region on Lake Natoma.

The bright spots for the Pirates came from the Novice 8 and Second Novice 8 races, where OCC dominated the field en route to open-water victories. The Novice 8 boat came in with a winning time of 6:14.35, over 13 seconds ahead of runner-up UC Irvine (6:27.66) and 14 seconds up on UCLA (6:28.86).

For the Second Novice Eight, Coast jumped ahead of the field and cruised to a nearly eight-second win over UCI and a 14 second win over UCLA with a victorious time of 6:40.93.

For the Second Varsity Eight, Coast advanced to the Grand Finals, where they finished fifth overall with a solid time of 6:25.78, while the Varsity Four finished eighth overall with a time of 7:26.59.

Unfortunately for OCC, it was a heartbreaking finish in the Varsity 8, where a slow start by the Pirates (6:01.99) proved too much to overcome as they finished fourth overall, just two seconds behind first-place Santa Clara (5:59.63), .32 seconds behind runner-up UC Santa Barbara (6:01.67) and .07 seconds behind third-place UC San Diego (6:01.92).

"We were on the short end of a four-way photo finish in the grand final, which hurts, but we've still got four weeks to prepare for the national championships," OCC head coach Cam Brown said. "It was a fantastic result for our novice boats with open-water wins, so that was great to see."

OCC will prepare for the American Collegiate Rowing Association (ACRA) National Championships at Lake Lanier in Georgia, set for Saturday, May 26.
