Pirates take over first in OEC with solid home win over OEC field

COSTA MESA -- The friendly confines of the Costa Mesa Country Club was the perfect setting for the Orange Coast College men's golf team, who took over first place in the Orange Empire Conference with a winning team score of 358 on Wednesday against the rest of the OEC field.

With the 5-0 sweep, the Pirates (29-6) move one win ahead of second-place Cypress (28-7) after the Chargers took runner-up at CMCC with a 365. Other scores from the match were turned in by Mt. San Antonio (371), Riverside (374), Saddleback (384) and Irvine Valley (397).

On a day that saw six golfers shoot under par -- the most in any match this year -- the home-team Pirates took advantage of their familiar surroundings and notched three sub-par performances.

Leading the for Coast was Myoung Kim, who carded a 3-under-par 69, tying him with Cypress' Matt Rafter for lowest score in any OEC round this year.

Close behind Kim were teammates Taka Inoue and Connor O'Hern, who each carded 1-under 71s, while Bryson Brantley came in at 1-over 73 and Chris Casey carded a 2-over 74.

The Pirates will return to action at the State Championship Preview, played at Sandpiper Country Club, beginning at 11 a.m.
