Pirates pick up first win under Doucette!

SAN DIEGO -- The Orange Coast College women's basketball team picked up win No. 1 in the Sammy Doucette Era with a 53-49 win in the third game of the San Diego City College Basketball Tournament on Saturday.
After opening with a pair of losses in the tournament to host SDCC and L.A. Harbor, the Pirates used a dominating pair of quarters to outlast IVC (0-5).
Trailing 11-9, Coast used a 20-9 outburst in the second quarter to lead 29-20 at the break. In that quarter alone, OCC dominated the boards on Imperial Valley, out-rebounding them 15-5 and went 8-16 from the field, including 3-of-8 from 3-point range.
Imperial Valley turned things around in the second half and outscored the Pirates, 25-12, to take a 45-41 lead into the final quarter.
Coast trailed 47-44 with 7:09 remaining before the Pirates clamped down on defense and held IVC scoreless over the next five-and-a-half minutes of action. Over that span, back-to-back baskets by Gracelynn Figueroa, and a made jumper by Violet Cisneros pushed the Pirates ahead, 50-47 with 1:22 left in the game.
IVC got to within one at 50-49 with under a minute to go, but a key steal my Lea Adame forced Imperial Valley to foul Anna Hollister, who calmly nailed both free throws with 38 seconds remaining, putting OCC up 52-49.
After a missed layup by IVC, Cisneros made 1-of-2 from the free-throw line with 27 seconds left to make it 53-49 and that proved to be the final score after a missed 3-point attempt by Imperial Valley ended the game.
OCC returns to action Dec. 5-7 up in Santa Maria at the Allan Hancock College Tournament. Coast will play the host Bulldogs on Dec. 5 at 7 p.m. before playing Glendale on Dec. 6 (5 p.m.) and Santa Barbara on Dec. 7 (1 p.m.).
The Pirates will have their first home game on Wednesday, Dec. 18 against Palomar, beginning at 5 p.m.
