Pirates' "Fab Five" hold off Imperial Valley

LOS ANGELES -- There is no complaining of playing time on the part of the Orange Coast College women's basketball team as the five-player Pirates found a way to pick up a 47-44 nonconference win over Imperial Valley College on the final day of the East Los Angeles College Tournament on Sunday.

Gracelynn Figueroa led OCC (2-10) with 15 points, while Lea Adame added 14 points and seven rebounds. Violet Cisneros led OCC with 12 rebounds to go along with six points, while Anna Hollister added 11 points and four steals and Cristal Hernandez chipped in 10 crucial rebounds as well.

In a game that saw over a dozen lead changes, the Pirates regained their advantage when Figueroa drained a jump shot with 32 seconds left, putting OCC up, 45-44. A costly IVC turnover gave the ball back to Coast and Hernandez went 1-of-2 from the foul line to push the lead up to 46-44.

OCC's defense again came up big and forced another Imperial Valley turnover and after a quick foul, Hollister made her second attempt from the free-throw line to put the Pirates up three at 47-44. IVC had one, final, last-second 3-point attempt, but the shot missed its mark, giving the Pirates the win.

For IVC (5-10), Jasmine Ponce led the way with 16 points, while Raquel Perez added 10. It was OCC's second straight win over Imperial Valley this season (53-49 on Nov. 16).

After 12 straight games on the road, the Pirates FINALLY get to play at the friendly confines of the Peterson Gym on Friday night against Cerritos, beginning at 5 p.m. to wrap up nonconference play.
