Legan goes for 40 as Pirates roll over Dons

SANTA ANA -- Apparently, Alexis Legan wasn't affected by the long, COVID-related break for the Orange Coast College women's basketball team. The sophomore standout scored a season-high 40 points to lead the Pirates to an 84-42 Orange Empire Conference win over Santa Ana College on Friday night.

After a two-week hiatus from the season, the Pirates (12-6, 2-1 in the OEC) came out shooting lights-out basketball against the host Dons (7-11, 0-3), with Legan leading the way. She went 15-of-26 from the floor and a perfect 9-for-9 from the free-throw line to become just the fourth player in the history of OCC women's basketball to hit the 40-point mark. The last to do so was Crystal McCormick against Fullerton during the 2005-06 season. Leagan also grabbed a team best 19 rebounds and also dished out a team-best eight assists in one of the best all-around games in recent history.

Legan was not the only one who stepped up for the shorthanded Pirates. Freshman Karina Cabrera scored 22 points, dished out six assists and notched a team-best six steals, while Savannah Seiler added 10 points, six rebounds, three assists and three steals. Karissa Chvilicek joined Legan on the boards and had 10 big rebounds to go along with five points.

Coast put its foot on the gas pedal and never let up right from the opening whistle, jumping out to a 22-5 advantage and led 24-12 after the opening period.

The Pirates never looked back from there as an icy night of shooting (23.4 percent) doomed the Dons in their home gym.

OCC will play at El Camino on Wednesday at 7 p.m. before returning home to host Fullerton College on Friday, also at 7 p.m. No fans will be allowed inside the Peterson Gym for Friday's game.
