Pirates topple Olympians for first win of the season

COSTA MESA -- It was an inspired performance from the Orange Coast College women's basketball team as the Pirates rolled past San Diego Mesa, 89-67, on Friday night inside the Peterson Gym.

After struggling to find offensive success on Tuesday night in a loss to Victor Valley, the Pirates (1-1) nearly topped their opening game 44 points in the first half. Coast shot 49 percent from the floor (31-of-63) and drained eight 3-pointers along the way.

Karina Cabrera paced OCC's offense with a game-high 31 points, including six made 3-pointers and an impressive 9-of-18 shooting from the floor and 7-of-8 from the free-throw line.

Ashlee Dorantes added 14 points and 10 rebounds, while Alexis Legan chipped in 13 pints to go along with six rebounds, five assists and five steals.

Off the bench, Kyoka Ohara provided a solid spark for the Pirates with 15 pints, six rebounds, eight assists and five steals.

Niki Madgedi had 21 points for the Olympians (0-1).

Coast led 40-32 at the half, then, pulled away from the Olympians in the third, outscoring them 29-13 to grab control of the contest. The Pirates were never threatened the rest of the night.

OCC will return to action on Tuesday, Nov. 16 at home against Chaffey College, beginning at 4:30 p.m.
