Legan named OCC's Female Athlete of the Year

COSTA MESA -- Alexis Legan, a key component to last year's, 20-win, Orange Coast College women's basketball season, was named the OCC Female Athlete of the Year, as voted on by all of the Pirate head coaches, for the 2021-22 school year.

Legan, who joined the Pirates last year after spending time at Long Beach State and Northern Illinois University, flourished under head coach Sammy Doucette and averaged 21.8 points, 9.3 rebounds, 3.1 assists and 1.9 steals per game. Her 21.8 PPG was second-highest average in the Orange Empire Conference and seventh-highest in the entire state.

"I'm so proud of what Alexis has accomplished and meant to this program," Doucette said of Legan. "Although she's already had quite a journey, there is so much more left for her to achieve. Her winning the school's Female AOTY is extremely well deserved and I'm thankful to everyone who thought so as well."

Legan's strong play was one major factor in the turnaround season turned in by the Pirates in 2021-22. After a few rough seasons and COVID-19 interruptions, the Pirates were finally fully loaded and went on to finish the season 20-9 and returned to postseason play for the first time in five years. Coast finished the season winners of 12 of its last 17 games and six of its last eight, with Legan leading the way. The guard/forward reached double figures in 20-of-23 games played and notched a season-best 40 points to go along with 19 rebounds and eight assists in a blowout win over Santa Ana on Jan. 28.

Legan earned first-team, All-Orange Empire Conference honors for the Pirates last season and will continue her athletic and academic careers at Vanguard University this fall.
