McIntyre's 35 points lifts Pirates over Monarchs

COSTA MESA -- Apparently the old Peterson Gym suits Bridgette McIntyre just fine. After scoring 29 points in the home opener two days ago, the sophomore transfer came back with 35 more points to lead the Orange Coast College women's basketball team to a 78-47 nonconference win over visiting L.A. Valley College.

McIntyre was on fire from the opening whistle, going 13-of-18 from the floor, 6-of-8 from 3-point range and 3-3 from the line. Hailey Estrada added 10 points, four rebounds and five assists in just 14 minutes of play off the bench, while Jordan Arreola added nine points.

For the Monarchs (2-2), Ashley Jeong led the way with 15 points, while Mary Corbett added 12.

But the story of the night, besides McIntyre's hot shooting, was the relentless defense applied by the Pirates against the Monarchs. Coast forced LAVC into 26 turnovers and had 15 steals off of their pressure defense, with Ashari Cassell leading the way with four to go along with seven points, five rebounds and seven assists.

The game was out of reach early as the Pirates outscored the Monarchs 21-10 in the first quarter and bettered those numbers with a 20-4 second quarter. The Monarchs were held to 2-of-10 shooting with nine turnovers in that fateful second quarter.

Coast will head up the coast on Tuesday and take on Santa Barbara City College, beginning at 5 p.m. OCC's next home game will take place on Friday, Dec. 1 against Rio Hondo in the OCC Crossover, beginning at 5 p.m.
