Pirates earn pair of wins at Berg Cup
NEWPORT BEACH -- The Orange Coast College women's crew took on Long Beach State, UC Irvine, UC Santa Barbara, Loyola Marymount and San Diego State as the Pirates battled for the Berg Cup on Saturday on the Newport Harbor.
Coast competed in three races and earned the top spot in two of them, setting the pace against some of the top four-year programs in all of Southern California.
The most dominating performance of the morning took place in the Novice 8 race, where OCC competed against UCI and LBSU. It was NO contest as the Pirates pulled ahead early and never let up, cruising to a 35-second win with a time of 7 minutes, 41.6 seconds. UCI (8:16.5) was a distant second, with LBSU (8:26.4) finishing third.
It was more of the same for the Pirates in the Varsity 4, with Coast crew hitting the finish line first in the 2,000-meter race with a time of 7:55.6, followed by San Diego State (8:02.2) and OCC's "B" boat (8:21.9).
Coast also earned a fourth-place time in the Varsity 8 race with a solid time of 7:36.5. UCI (7:08.4) took the top time, with Long Beach State (7:23.0) finishing second.
