Two solid races for the Pirate women at WIRAs

SACRAMENTO -- The Orange Coast College women's crew brought up two boats for the Western Intercollegiate Rowing Association Championships this past weekend and the Pirates came up with the boats ... and a pair of medals for their efforts against some of the top four-year programs in the western United States.

For the women's Novice 8 boat (Katelyn De Rosas, Madyson Fitch, Maddie Garner, Irais Jaime, Klara Kettler, Ivory Yohn, Morgan Welch, Sylva Pinedijan and coxswain Margrett Thai), OCC took on seven other boats, but down the stretch, it was a two-boat battle between the Pirates and UC Davis. In the end, the Pirates earned an impressive silver medal, crossing the finish line with a runner-up time of 7 minutes, 32.059 seconds, just behind UCD's 7:24.093 and well ahead of third-place Arizona State (7:48.32). UCI "A" took fourth at 7:52.427, followed by UC Santa Barbara (7:58.132), UCI "B" (8:51.077) and Cal Poly SLO (8:59.638).

Out of 21 schools in the Varsity 4, Coast earned a spot in the Grand Final race and a third-place finish, crossing the finish line with a time of 7:55.421. Cal Poly Humboldt took the top time with 7:41.28, with the University of Central Oklahoma in second at 7:49.799.

Coast has a three weeks to prepare for the ACRA National Finals, set for May 14-18 in Nashville, Tennessee.
