
Pirates open season with 9-0 win over Cougars
COSTA MESA -- It was a perfect start to the 2025 season for the Orange Coast College women's tennis team as the Pirates rolled to a 9-0 nonconference win over visiting College of the Canyons on Tuesday at the OCC Tennis Complex.
The Pirates, Southern California champions from a year ago, came out strong in singles play, dropping a combined nine games total. Straight-set wins came courtesy of Kei Chung (6-3, 6-1), Mebuki Kitakuni (6-0, 6-0), Sydney Friesan (6-1, 6-0), Kaylee Ho (6-2, 6-0), Ava Bocek (6-1, 6-0) and Kayla Cheng (6-0, 6-1).
In doubles play, the team of Chung/Breckyn Burg were pushed hard from the No. 1 court, but still pulled out a 9-7 win. The twosomes of Friesan/Kitakuni and Ho/Cheng each pulled out 8-3 doubles victories to complete the nine-win sweep.
The Pirates followed up Tuesday's sweep with a solid 6-3 road win at Ventura College on Thursday to improve to 2-0 overall.
Coast will return to the OCC Tennis Complex on Tuesday against El Camino College, beginning at 2:30 p.m.
