Pirates take third at Coast-Guard Invitational

COSTA MESA -- Orange Coast College and Vanguard University co-hosted Friday's 2017 Coast-Guard Invitational and the Pirates posted some solid times and marks against both two- and four-year competition.

The Pirates took third overall with 164 points, just slightly behind the meet leader Vanguard (182) and Palomar College (176).

Coast was led by distance standout, sophomore Alyssa Allen, who won a pair of individual races, claiming the top spot with room to spare in both the 1,500 meters (4:45.26) and the 3,000 (10:35.76). In the 1,500, Allen was 16 seconds ahead of VU runner-up Bethany Hinson (5:01.74) and in the 3,000, she topped teammate and race runner-up Karen Cruz by nearly a full minute (11:29.8).

Another double-winner came from Pirate speedster Mychal Robinson, who topped the field in both the 100 hurdles (15.05) and the 200 (27.73).

Robinson and Allen joined Monica Ayala and Jennilee Reyes in the 1,600 relay and the OCC foursome ran to victory with a time of 4:18.91.

Coast went 1-2 in the long jump as Lauren Delgadillo earned the top mark with a jump of 17-feet, 5 1/2 inches, while Ayala took second with a jump of 16-1 1/4.

Ayala wasn't done there. She went to the triple jump and topped the field with a mark of 34-6 3/4.

The Pirates will return to the track on Friday at the Cerritos Invitational, beginning at 9 a.m.
