Coast women finish runner-up at OEC Track Finals
RIVERSIDE -- The Orange Coast College women's track and field team pulled out a second-place team score at the Orange Empire Conference Track and Field Championships, hosted by Riverside City College, this past weekend.
With 11 top-three performances, the Pirates took home the team silver medal with 138 points, behind only Riverside (408) and ahead of Saddleback (114.5), Fullerton (46), Santa Ana (39) and Golden West (19.5).
OCC's top performer from the two-week event was sophomore standout Alyssa Allen, who earned two firsts and two seconds in her four individual events. In the 800, Allen led from the opening gun and topped the field by over four seconds with a time of 2 minutes, 20.62 seconds. She bettered her performance in the 1,500, clearing the field by nearly seven seconds with a gold-medal time of 4:44.
In the opening week, Allen added to her work load with a third-place time of 19:14.88 in the 5,000 and a fourth-place time of 43:09.89 in the 10,000.
Pirate teammate Mychal Robinson took on the best of the best in the two hurdles events and earned two medals for her efforts, taking home first place with a time of 14.63 in the 100 hurdles and a bronze medal with a 1:08.69 in the 400 hurdles.
Sophomore all-around athlete Monica Ayala earned a silver medal in the 400 (1:01.67) and also earned a field event bronze medal in the long jump (16-feet, 5 1/2 inches).
Teammate Lauren Delgadillo edged out Ayala in the long jump and earned the silver medal with a mark of 16-6 3/4.
In the javelin, sophomore Maddy Carbajal placed third with a throw of 99-1 1/4, while both of OCC relay teams finished second in the 400 (50.4) and 1,600 (4:32.07) events.
Up next for the Pirates is the Southern California Regional Meet, which begins on May 6 (prelims) and May 13 (finals) at San Bernardino Valley College at 9 a.m.
