Pirate trio represent Pirates at SoCal Heptathlon

NORWALK -- The Orange Coast College women's track and field team had three of its members compete at the 2018 Southern California Regional Heptathlon on Wednesday at Cerritos College.

The trio of Julie Mariano, Precious Kilburg and Yasmine Cocotis all earned a spot in the top-14 in the region and in spite of no state meet qualifiers, there were plenty of quality times and marks to go around.

For Mariano, who finished 11th overall with 2,828 points, the OCC freshman earned a pair of plus-500-point marks in the high jump (4-feet, 8 1/4 inches) and the 200 meters (29.37 seconds).

Kilburg, who finished just behind Mariano in 12th place (2,625 points), used a solid time in the 200 (28.81, 568 points) and the 800 (2:51.42, 449 points), while Cocotis (1,869 points) picked up her highest point total in the 800 with a time of 2:58.33.

The CCCAA Track and Field Championships will take place on May 19-20 at American River College. For the rest of the OCC Pirates, they will compete for their shot at state, beginning on April 21 at the Orange Empire Conference Championships, hosted by Riverside City College.
