Pirates fare well at the SCC Opener

TORRANCE -- It was a strong showing for the Orange Coast College women's track and field squad as they took on some of the top athletes in Southern California at the 2024 SCC Opener, hosted by El Camino College on Saturday.

Freshman Chloe Guerena showed some quickness and endurance for the Pirates, winning the 200-meter dash with a winning time of 25.68 seconds, just under a second faster than runner-up Morgan Venable from Long Beach City (26.53).

In the 400, it was fellow Pirate, Esmeray Demirbas edging out Saddleback Track Club's Sara Fleming at the tape to win with a time of 1:00.93.

Distance specialist Liberty Miller earned a third-place time in the 1,500 with a 5:00.82 as well as earning fifth place in the 3,000 (11:11.94).

In the 1,600 relay, the OCC foursome of Guerena, Demirbas, Annabelle Low and Lucero Penaloza finished second overall with a time of 4:17.9.

In the high jump, the trio of Demirbas (5-foot-1), Low (4-11) and Jaylynn Dowden (4-9) finished 2-3-4, respectively, while in the long jump, it was Guerena who placed third with a jump of 15-4.

Abigail Gavrilovic earned a top-five finish in the women's discus, finishing fourth overall with a throw of 114-3.

The Pirates will return to action on Saturday at the Concordia University Invitational, beginning at 10 a.m.
