Pirates sweep Rustlers before falling to Mounties in four

WALNUT -- The Orange Coast College women's volleyball team took on a pair of tough teams over the weekend, sweeping past rival Golden West on Friday before falling to host Mt. San Antonio College in four sets on Saturday.

After opening Orange Empire Conference play with a loss at Riverside City College, the Pirates (7-3, 1-1 in the OEC), came out clicking on all cylinders against the Rustlers (6-2, 2-1) and never looked back, rolling to a 25-18, 25-22, 25-21 win at GWC.

Coast was led offensively by Kingsley Mason, who came through with 14 kills and a team-best 10 block assists. Middle blockers Mary Masias and Joceline Martinez combined for 14 kills and only two hitting errors with 12 total blocks.

On defense, Coast was all over the floor with Caroline Vasquez leading the way with 17 digs, followed by Lulu Utterback (12 digs), Taylor Brandley (12 digs) and Jordan Packer (11 digs). 

Packer helped pace the offense with 31 assists, while the Pirate blocking was superb with 23 total blocks. 

On Saturday, the Pirates headed up to Mt. SAC, where the Mounties pulled out a four-set win over the Pirates, 25-22, 23-25, 25-16, 25-23. 

Utterback had a team-best 13 kills to go along with 16 digs, while Brandley added seven kills and 10 digs. Packer dished out 24 assists, while Cassie Smits Van Oyen added 10. Vasquez anchored the Pirates' defense with 20 digs.

Coast will return home and face Cypress College on Wednesday night, beginning at 6 p.m. (TICKETS).
