Pirates back on winning track

COSTA MESA -- After a pair of tough five-set losses to Saddleback and Irvine Valley, the Orange Coast College women's volleyball team is back on the winning track with wins over Fullerton and Santiago Canyon to improve to 11-5 overall, 5-3 in the Orange Empire Conference.

On Wednesday, the Pirates hosted the Hornets and cruised to a 25-8, 25-15, 25-11 win inside the Peterson Gym. Lulu Utterback had nine kills and eight digs for Coast, while Taylor Brandley added eight kills and seven digs. Hayden Johnston also had nine kills and a .667 hitting percentage for OCC, while the setting duo of Jordan Packer and Cassie Smits Van Oyen combined for 33 assists.

On Friday, it was more of the same for the Pirates, who quickly dispatched the Hawks, 25-12, 25-14, 25-9 inside the Peterson Gym. Brandley was OCC's top hitter with eight kills and its top defender with nine digs. Utterback added six kills and eight digs, while Smits Van Oyen dished out a team-best 11 assists. 

Through the first round of OEC play, the Pirates are two wins back of first-place Irvine Valley (7-1) and one behind Cypress (6-2) and Saddleback (6-2). Riverside is tied with the Pirates at 5-3 and those two teams will kick off the second round on Wednesday at OCC, beginning at 6 p.m.
