Pirates split four at Saddleback Tournament

MISSION VIEJO -- The Orange Coast College women's water polo team split four matches last weekend at the Saddleback College Tournament, topping Modesto (11-4) and Palomar (9-5), while losing to Sierra (16-5) and Ventura (10-7).

After falling in the opener to Sierra on Friday, the Pirates regrouped and picked up their first win of the season later that day, thanks in large part to a dominating first half of play. Coast outscored Modesto 8-2 in the first two quarters and never looked back. Rachel Rookard had four goals to lead the way, while Kayla Yamamoto added three goals and Delaney Mazelin added two goals and two assists.

The goalie combo of Taylor McGrath held MC to just four goals with a combined nine saves.

On Saturday, OCC opened the day with a 10-7 loss to Ventura, but again, bounced back with a strong performance against Palomar and earned a 9-5 win. Mazelin led the offense this time with four goals on eight shots and added a pair of steals and an assist, while Rookard added two goals, two assists and a steal.

McGrath was on her game against the Comets, with seven big saves against a steady Comet offense.

OCC will return to action on Feb. 20-21 at the Riverside City College Tournament. OCC's first home contest will take place on Wednesday, Oct. 9 against Cypress, beginning at 4 p.m.
