Pirates come up short against Cypress

COSTA MESA -- The Orange Coast College women's water polo team gave it a good run against visiting Cypress, but in the end, the Chargers were able to prevail, 14-5, on Wednesday at the OCC Swim Complex.

The first half was when the Chargers (7-4, 1-2) took control of the match as the Pirates (3-10, 0-2) fell behind 10-2. Coast showed good fight in the second half, but Cypress managed to keep the Pirates in check for the win.

Five different Pirate players -- Kara Kanetis, Kayla Yamamoto, Journey Werner, Briana Boatman and Melissa Segovia -- each scored goals, while Inez Gonzalez notched two assists.

In goal, Taylor McGrath came up with seven saves, while for the Chargers, Morgan Stiewig stopped nine shots.

Ruth Quintanilla was the top scorer for the Chargers with four goals, while Sara Morris added three.

The Pirates will return to action on Wednesday at Saddleback College, beginning at 4 p.m. OCC's next home contest will be on Oct. 23 against Fullerton, also at 4 p.m.
