Pirates open OEC play with 12-9 win over Bobcats

MISSION VIEJO -- Ella Wisdom had three goals, while goalie Annabelle Sherman allowed just one first-half goal to lead the Orange Coast College women's water polo team to a 12-9 Orange Empire Conference win over host Saddleback College on Wednesday afternoon.
OCC (4-1, 1-0 in the OEC) jumped out to a 5-0 first-quarter lead and never looked back, in spite of a nice fourth-quarter comeback by the host Bobcats (4-1, 0-1). OCC's lead grew to 8-0, led by a pair of goals from Jillian Duwe and Destiny Hernandez over that span.
Saddleback got to within five at 9-4 in the third quarter before goals by Wisdom, Ashley Bellavia and Faith Cuevas sealed the deal for the Pirates.
Sherman was strong in goal, allowing just one goal with seven saves in her two quarters of work.
The Pirates will return to action on Friday and Saturday at the Riverside City College Tournament.
