Pirates blaze hot trails at SoCal Preview Meet

The Orange Coast College women's cross country team is showing the rest of the state who to follow as the 2013 continues to heat up.

With FIVE top-20 finishes at Friday's Southern California Preview Meet, the Pirates took on the top teams in the region and cruised to victory with a team score of 40 points.

The only other team in the race with a team score in double figures was Glendale, which finished second with 99 points.

Led by the 1-2 punch of sophomores Karen Silvas and Leanne Allen, the Pirates had little trouble with the opposition. Silvas set the pace on the 5k course and won the race with a time of 19 minutes, 10.83 seconds, edging out Moorpark's Rachel Naumann (19:11.56).

Allen led the second wave of runners and finished third with a time of 19:24.39, followed by the threesome of Guadalupe Cantoran (10th, 19:54.93), Raeanna Cortez (11th, 19:57.85) and Kristie Son (16th, 20:20.18).

Other top times and performances for the Pirates include Allison Nagel (21:11.65) and Aini Morales (22:05.22).

OCC will return to action on Friday, Oct. 4 down in San Diego for the Triton Cross Country Invitational, beginning at 8 a.m.
