Pirate women dominate field at San Diego Invitational

SAN DIEGO -- The machine known as the Orange Coast College women's cross country team headed down to San Diego on Saturday and a few hours later, headed back up as winner of the San Diego Cross Country Invitational, hosted by San Diego City College.

Winners of their first three meets of the season, the Pirates continued to roll with another dominating performance at Saturday's event, finishing 2-3-4-6-7 for a team score of 22 points.

San Diego Mesa was a distant second with 78 points, while Fullerton (83) took third overall.

East L.A.'s Laura Aceves won the 5,000-meter race with a time of 18 minutes, 57.3 seconds, but after that, it was a sea of orange and blue as five of the next six top times were earned by OCC.

Karen Silvas finished second overall with a time of 19:24.4, Leanne Allen placed third with a 19:32.8, Guadlupe Cantoran finished fourth at 19:39.2, Kristie Son took sixth at 20:03.8 and Raeanna Cortez placed seventh at 20:08.4.

Other top performances for the Pirates included Allison Nagel (12th, 20:43.9), Mariah Chapin (18th, 21:11.50), Summer Ordaz (21:43.4), Aini Morales (22:52.4) and Norma Ledesma (24.05).

The Pirates will return home and compete at the Vanguard Invitational, held at Fairview Park, on Saturday, beginning at 8 a.m.
