Pirates shock Lasers and top Hornets in OEC tri-match
HUNTINGTON BEACH -- The Orange Coast College beach volleyball team pulled off the upset of the 2017 season as the Pirates topped Irvine Valley, 3-2 on Friday, handing the Lasers their first-ever Orange Empire Conference loss in team history.
In fact, it was just the second time that IVC has ever lost to a community college program (a 3-1 loss to Grossmont in last year's state finals).
Coast (5-5 overall, 2-1 in OEC) started off strong as the teams of Megan Ritchie/Jadelyn Forgiarini (21-18, 21-17) and Alexandra Hayes/Enjelica Glattli (21-17, 21-15) picked up early wins and gave the Pirates an early 2-0 lead in the dual match.
IVC picked up straight-set wins in the No. 3 and No. 4 matches to even things up.
In the No. 2 match, the OCC tandem of Measha Lindstrand and Sierra Lim went toe to toe with IVC's Ally Sassman and Brittany Tuilau and lost the opening set, 21-17.
But the Pirate duo bounced back in dominating fashion with a 21-7 win in the second set and carried that momentum into a convincing 15-8 win in the third set to claim the victory and clinch the dual-match win for OCC.
In the afternoon session, Coast took on Fullerton and rolled to a 4-1 win.
Coast was again led by the duo of Lindstrand and Lim, who defeated FC's Rebecca Hicks and Leslie Andros, 21-14, 21-15.
Tayler Jaramillo and Amanda Kiralla had a tougher time at No. 3 against Katherine Serna and Shawnee Longmeyer, but the Coast twosome prevailed, 9-21, 21-16, 15-11. OCC's other two wins came by way of forfeit.
Coast will return to action on Friday at Saddleback College, beginning at 10 a.m.
