Pirates capture two wins in OEC tri-match

IRVINE -- The Orange Coast College beach volleyball team went into a tough venue and walked out with a pair of impressive wins on Friday at their tri-match with fellow Orange Empire Conference foes, Fullerton and host Irvine Valley.

In the morning session against Fullerton, the Pirates routed the Hornets, 5-0. OCC's four duos who competed cruised to victory including the teams of Jordan Packer/Kayla Ihrig (21-4, 21-5), Lola Fernsten/Briana Bowman (21-10, 21-9), Madison Hopkins/Nika Safavi (21-13, 21-4) and Sophia Wirtzer/Camryn Hayek (21-5, 21-4). OCC won the fifth duo match by forfeit.

Against the rival Lasers, the strong play continued for the Pirates, who earned a 4-1 win.

Coast needed a pair of three-set wins to prevail over IVC and those came from the duos of Bowman/Fernsten (19-21, 21-14, 16-14) and Hopkins/Safavi (21-15, 15-21, 15-11). Wirtzer/Hayek took care of business in straight sets (21-11, 21-11), as did Reagan Anderson/Ashlyn Couch (21-11, 21-8).

The Pirates (4-1) will return to action on Friday at Cypress College with a tri-match with the host Chargers and Golden West, beginning at 10 a.m.
