Pirates topple Rustlers, Chargers
HUNTINGTON BEACH -- In the most crucial tri-match of the 2025 season, the Orange Coast College beach volleyball team came up big with a pair of wins over host Golden West (4-1) and Cypress (4-1) on Friday morning.
In the win over the Chargers, OCC (14-1 overall, 12-0 in the OEC) picked up straight-set wins from duos of Jordan Packer/Kayla Ihrig (21-17, 21-18), Sophia WirtzerCamryn Hayek (21-9, 21-17), Madison Hopkins/Nika Safavi (21-12, 21-5) and Reagan Anderson/Ashlyn Couch (21-12, 21-5).
Coast continued its strong play into the following match against the rival Rustlers, earning four-of-five wins, highlighted at No. 1, where Packer/Ihrig outlasted the Rustlers' duo, 21-17, 21-17 in a hard-fought matchup. In fact, the Pirates pulled out several close sets, including Wirtzer/Hayek (21-16, 21-16), Safavi/Hopkins (21-16, 21-15) and Anderson/Couch (21-17, 21-7).
With the wins, the Pirates are now two losses up on the Rustlers (9-2 in the OEC) and four losses up on Cypress and IVC (8-4 each) with just four OEC matches remaining.
Up next, Coast will travel to Santiago Canyon College on Friday for a tri-match against the host Hawks (10 a.m.) and Santa Ana (11 a.m.).
