Pirates capture 11th straight win by topping Hornets, Lasers
HUNTINGTON BEACH -- The Orange Coast College beach volleyball team continued its dominance throughout the Orange Empire Conference with another pair of wins over Fullerton College (5-0) and Irvine Valley (4-1) on Friday at the Newland Volleyball Courts.
The wins -- OCC's 11th in a row -- improve the Pirates to 12-1 overall and a perfect 10-0 in the OEC.
Against the Hornets, Coast wasted no time and picked up straight-set wins from the first four pairs, while No. 5 was won by forfeit. OCC was led by the duos of Jordan Packer/Kayla Ihrig (21-3, 21-8), Madison Hopkins/Nika Safavi (21-12, 21-14), Sophia Wirtzer/Camryn Hayek (21-9, 21-5) and Paige Blakely/Ashlyn Couch (21-8, 21-9).
Against the Lasers, the scores were tighter, but the Pirates still took care of business. At No. 2, the duo of Lola Fernsten/Briana Bowman needed a third set, but prevailed, 21-18, 17-21, 15-7, while straight-set wins were turned in by Safavi/Hopkins (21-8, 21-12) and Wirtzer/Hayek (21-12, 21-12). Once again, Coast won via forfeit in match No. 5.
Coast will head to Golden West for a tough tri-match with second place GWC and third-place Cypress on Friday, beginning at 10 a.m.
