Pirates pull out 10-inning win over Comets, 11-10

COSTA MESA -- A long, cold, blustery day at John Altobelli Park was made bearable for the Orange Coast College baseball team as the Pirates pulled out an 11-10, 10-inning win over visiting Palomar College on Tuesday afternoon.

The Pirates (8-2), winners of six straight, led 5-0 and 7-3 before the Comets (4-4) tied, then passed the Pirates in the seventh, only to see Coast tie the game in the ninth and win it in the 10th.

Another ho-hum day at the "House That Alto Built."

Koby Williams went 3-for-5 with a home run, four runs scored and an RBI for OCC, while Zach Dickason added three hits, a run and two RBI. Evan Scalley and Zach Crandall each had two hits with Scalley scoring twice and Crandall scoring once and driving in a run.

In the bottom of the ninth, with the Pirates trailing 10-8, Coast was down to its last out with a runner on first base when Williams chopped an infield single that moved baserunner Taylor Takata to second. Another slow dribbler off the bat of Dickason was thrown away, allowing Takata to score and moved Williams to third.

Palomar closer Mike Villani then uncorked a wild pitch, which allowed Williams to score the tying run and send the game to extra innings.

In the 10th, the Comets had a runner on third with nobody out, but Dimond Loosli worked in a pair of strikeouts, then picked up a game-saving catch from left-fielder Sebastian Moore to keep Palomar off of the scoreboard.

In the bottom of the 10th, Scalley reached on a single to center, advanced to second on a ground out and scored on a game-winning single off the bat of Kanan Treece

Lyndon Glidewell did a good job of keeping the Comets at bay, allowing just one hit and two strikeouts over 2 2/3 innings of scoreless relief. Loosli picked up the win with his scoreless frame in the 10th.

Both teams will be back at OCC on Thursday, beginning at 1 p.m.
