Pirates swept by Cougars in Regional playoff

COSTA MESA -- The 2023 season has come to an end for the Orange Coast College baseball team went 0-2 against the College of the Canyons is this weekend's Southern California Regional playoffs at John Altobelli Park.

The sixth-seeded Pirates (25-16) could not stop the bats of the 19th-seeded Cougars (24-16) as the guests won the opener, 16-6, followed by a 13-11 victory that moved Canyons to the next round and sent the Pirates home for the summer.

In Saturday's season finale, the Pirates fell behind 12-2 but showed some heart and determination in the later innings, scoring four runs in the sixth, three runs in the eighth and two more in the ninth before the Cougars finally collected the final out of the game.

Canyons was its own worst enemy with the big lead as 12 walks helped bring OCC back into the game. In fact, in OCC's 4-run sixth, the Pirates needed only one hit to score four times, thanks to four free passes by the COC pitching staff.

Brooks Snyder (5-4) pitched 5 2/3 innings and minimized any damage from nine walks by allowing just two hits with six strikeouts. Jack Ross (3-3) picked up the loss for OCC.

Koby Williams led the Pirates with a 2-for-4 day with three RBI, while Evan Scalley added two hits, two runs and two RBI. Sebastian Moore came off the bench and had a single, home run, two runs and an RBI. For Canyons, Jovan Camacho went 4-for-4 with three runs scored, Andy Ambriz added two hits, two runs and three RBI and Andrew Allanson collected two hits, including a home run, two runs and two RBI.
