Pirates topple Comets by TKO, 16-12

SAN MARCOS -- The Orange Coast College baseball is still trying to find the right formula on the pitching side of things, but on Saturday, the bats did the heavy lifting as the Pirates outlasted Palomar College, 16-12 in a nonconference matchup.

The Pirates (4-8) flexed their muscles against the Comets (4-4), pounding out 20 hits, including three home runs from Owen Wessel, J.T. Crabbe and Kanan Treece.

OCC jumped out to an 8-0 lead in the top of the first inning, then held on for dear life as the Comets spent the rest of the day chipping away at the large deficit, getting as close as 11-10 after the sixth.

But the Pirates pushed in five more runs over the final three innings to get the job done.

Wessel finished with four hits, including a double and home run, four runs scored and four RBI. Crabbe went 4-for-5 with two runs and an RBI, while Taylor Takata added three hits, three runs and two RBI.

Ethan Brand further added to the offensive assault by going 3-for-5 with a run and an RBI, while Koby Williams tacked on two more hits, scored twice and drove in three.

The Pirate bullpen trio of Nate Lockwood, Sawyer Spivey and Jackson Gilles limited the damage against a potent Comet offense, holding the hosts to just three runs (two earned) on five hits with no walks and a pair of strikeouts over the final 4 2/3 innings.

OCC will return to action on Thursday at home against Glendale, beginning at 2 p.m.
