Pirates rally to top Lasers, 7-4

IRVINE -- After a very forgettable nonconference portion of the 2024 season, the Orange Coast College baseball team embraced the 0-0 OEC record and remained unbeaten with a 7-4 road win at Irvine Valley College on Tuesday in the conference opener for both teams.

After falling behind 3-0 through the first five innings, the Pirates (6-12, 1-0) scored a pair of runs in the sixth and grabbed the lead for good in the eighth when Connor Debenon ripped a two-out, two-run single to left-center to give Coast a 4-3 lead.

In the top of the ninth, the Pirates picked up three big insurance runs, thanks to a two-run double by Zach Leite and an, RBI-single by Sebastian Moore.

The Pirate pitching trio of Dimond Loosli, Nate Lockwood and Jackson Gilles danced around 10 hits and six walks to only allow four runs for the game. Loosli went five solid innings, allowing three runs on seven hits with four walks and three strikeouts. Lockwood pitched a pivotal 1 2/3 innings of scoreless baseball, allowing the Pirates to rally late. From there Gilles went the final 2 1/3 innings, allowing a run on three hits to pick up the win in relief.

J.T. Crabbe went 3-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI, while Koby Williams added two hits and an RBI for the Pirates. Ethan Brand also added two hits and scored a pair of runs.

OCC and IVC will play game 2 of this three-game series at John Altobelli Park on Thursday, beginning at 2 p.m.
