Ventura sinks Pirates in season opener

VENTURA -- It was a long, hot day at the office for the Orange Coast College football team as Ventura came out strong and handed OCC a 45-7 loss on Saturday night at Ventura College.

While OCC (0-1) struggled to get anything going early on, the VC Pirates (1-0) came out strong and scored 21 points on their first three possessions.

Coast took advantage of a Ventura turnover and turned a nine-play, 32-yard drive into points as David Hernandez plowed into the end zone for a 1-yard TD, cutting the Ventura lead to 21-7.

But the VC Pirates never let up and used a field goal, a successful onside kick and a touchdown and score 10 points over the next two minutes to pull away for good.

Ventura racked up 636 yards of total offense, while holding OCC to just 195.

Quarterback Adam Carr threw for 111 yards on 9-of-26 passing, while Hernandez and RB teammate Nieco Walker combined for 78 yards on 18 carries.

Chris Castillo led the OCC defense with nine tackles, while I'Jon Akahi and Zeke Alleman each added eight.

Coast will return to action on Saturday night against East Los Angles College, beginning at 6 p.m. at OCC's Dick Tucker Field.
