Pirates drop to 0-2 with loss to Huskies

COSTA MESA -- The home opener for the Orange Coast College football team didn't turned out as hoped as the Pirates fell behind early and lost to East Los Angeles College, 45-17, on Saturday night at Dick Tucker Field.

After a rough first quarter that saw the Huskies (1-1) jump out to a 17-0 lead -- a lead that reached 24-0 just 29 seconds into the second quarter -- the Pirates settled down and evened their play up with ELAC, as the 21-17 score the rest of the way would indicate.

The ELAC defensive line controlled things for most of the game, holding the OCC ground attack to just 43 yards on 28 carries and just 188 yards of total offense for the entire game. Meanwhile, the Huskies racked up 578 yards of total offense and kept OCC in the neighborhood thanks in large part to 19 penalties for 177 yards.

After a bad ELAC punt deep in Huskies territory was compounded with a 15-yard infraction, OCC started a drive on the ELAC 21 yard line. Five plays later, OCC quarterback Adam Carr crashed into scrum in front of the goal line and pushed into the end zone from a yard out, trimming the Pirates' deficit to 24-7.

It stayed that way for the rest of the second quarter and after an ELAC touchdown in the third, Coast managed to pick up 10 fourth-quarter points on a 27-yard field goal off the foot of Zach Grisotti and a 4-yard touchdown strike from Carr to Jordan Clark midway through the final quarter.

Carr finished with 145 passing yards on 17-of-36 passing, while running back Nieco Walker had a solid night with 52 rushing yards on 15 carries. Clark led all receivers with eight catches for 42 yards and a TD.

Kyre Adams, Zeke Alleman and Grant Conaway each had six tackles to lead the Pirate defense.

Coast will return to action on Saturday at home against L.A. Southwest College, beginning at 6 p.m.
