Pirates stymied by Warriors, 21-3

TORRANCE -- The Orange Coast College football team couldn't get the offense going as the Pirates fell to El Camino, 21-3, on Saturday afternoon in a nonconference matchup.

It was a solid performance against a tough El Camino College squad, but in the end, the Pirates didn't have an answer against a stern Warriors defense. OCC held the Warriors to just 21 points and 258 yards of total offense, but the Pirate offense was stymied as well. Coast was held to just 198 yards of total offense and was just 5-of-17 on third-down opportunities. Quarterback Adam Carr overcame constant harassment and threw for 172 yards on 21-of-33 passing, while Kelemete Meredith and Nieco Walker combined for 77 rushing yards on 28 attempts. Chris Castillo anchored the Pirate defense with a team-best six tackles, including a sack and two tackles for loss.

Up next for the Pirates is a home matchup against Bakersfield College on Saturday at LeBard Stadium, beginning at 6 p.m. BC will be making the trek through the grapevine with a bit of a chip on its shoulder after a tough 20-19 loss at home to Golden West on Saturday. In a back-and-forth battle, the Renegades trailed 20-13 before an 8-yard TD pass from Branden Wingle to Shane Jones cut the deficit to 20-19. BC elected to go for the 2-point conversion and the win, but Wingle's pass attempt in the end zone fell incomplete, allowing the Rustlers to escape Bakersfield with the win. Wingle has thrown for 501 yards and four TDs, but is just 37-of-87 in pass attempts this year. The BC ground game is led by the 1-2 punch of Isaiah Martin (51 carries, 160 yards, two touchdowns) and Shane Jones (51-152-2). Keep an eye on the BC secondary, a squad that has nine interceptions heading into tonight's game, including Zach Hernandez, who leads the Renegades with four.
