Pirates come out hot, roll past Hornets

FULLERTON -- It was the first half of basketball the Orange Coast College men's basketball team has been waiting for all season long and on Friday night at Fullerton College, it all came together for the Pirates as they topped the Hornets, 86-59.

A 22-3 run early in the game gave the Pirates (3-11, 1-1 in Orange Empire Conference) a big lead and they never let up on the gas pedal. Coast outscored the Hornets (2-15, 0-2) 56-29 for the half as a balanced offense helped bring a much-needed victory for the guests.

All five starters reached double figures for the Pirates, led by Brad Buchignani, who had 18 points and four steals. Deion Page added 15 points, while Devasyia Hagger (11 rebounds) and Henry Nguyen each chipped in 13 and DeAndre Page tossed in 10. Off the bench, Coast was led by Connor McGrath with eight points and Ahmon Metdals with seven.

The Hornets were held in check all night and shot just 32.8 percent from the field (19-of-58) and just 3-of-14 from 3-point range. Isaiah Clark was Fullerton's lone double-digit scorer and finished with 12 points and 11 rebounds.

The Pirates will return to action on Wednesday at Riverside City College, beginning at 7 p.m. OCC's next home game will be on Friday, Jan. 23 against Saddleback, beginning at 7 p.m.
