COSTA MESA -- The Orange Coast College men's soccer team took on unbeaten East Los Angeles College and earned a well-deserved first victory of the year with a 2-0 win over the visiting Huskies under the lights at LeBard Stadium.
Playing against one of the top teams in the state, the Pirates (1-3-1) struck first and never let up as the Huskies (3-1-2) tried, but could not break through the OCC defense.
After two early goals by the Pirates were called off for offside infractions, Coast finally earned a goal that counted when a throw-in by Coast was deflected off the head of Ty O'Connor and onto the foot of teammate Isacc Campos, who didn't miss his opportunity and gave Coast a 1-0 lead in the 15th minute of play.
Both teams went back and forth and the game turned a bit chippy as both teams refused to back down from the other.
The Huskies outshot the Pirates 8-5 in the opening half, but most of their attempts slipped outside of the goal frame.
Early in the second half, Coast made it 2-0 when a perfect sent cross-pass from Abraham Cortes found teammate Peter Marquez, who buried his one-timer into the back of the net.
From there the OCC defense shut down a Huskie team that outscored its opponents 7-2 in its first five contests. Goalkeeper Ryan Brown was a strong last line of defense as he came up with six saves and controlled every loose ball near his area.
Coast heads out to Victor Valley for a nonconference matchup at 3 p.m. before opening up Orange Empire Conference play on Tuesday under the lights at LeBard Stadium against Santiago Canyon, beginning at 7 p.m.
