Pirates finish strong with 5-0 win over Fullerton

COSTA MESA -- If the Orange Coast College men's soccer team comes up short of a postseason berth, there will be plenty of high-ranked teams breathing sighs of relief.  After a slow start to the season, the Pirates wrapped up the regular season with a 5-0 win over visiting Fullerton College on Friday at the OCC Soccer Complex, their fourth win in a row.

Coast (10-9-1, 9-5-0 in Orange Empire Conference) finished in third place in conference and picked up quality wins over Golden West, Santiago Canyon and Santa Ana along the way, but a rough start during the nonconference portion of the season put Coast in a 1-4-1 hole heading into OEC play. The postseason seedings will be announced this weekend.

In the 19th minute, a long pass by Tommy Contreras found its way to teammate Peter Marquez, who then fed a nice cross pass to Taylor Kane, who redirected the ball past Hornet goalkeeper Juan Carlos Ramirez to put the Pirates ahead, 1-0.

Just seven minutes later, Isacc Campos used a nice pass to find Jesus Estrada, who buried a shot from 15 yards out to make it 2-0.

Early in the second half, Marquez took a pass from Kane and beat Ramirez with a shot to put OCC up, 3-0, and the rout was on.

Playing their best offensive game of the season, the Pirates picked up two more goals from Curtis Taniguchi (assisted by Marquez) and Abraham Cortes (assisted by Cobi Biefield).

That was more than enough for OCC goalie Ryan Brown, who wrapped up a solid sophomore season in goal with a six-save shutout. Brown finishes the regular season with a 1.12 goals-against average with just 22 goals allowed and 105 saves in 20 matches.
