Pirates settle for 1-1 draw against Chargers

COSTA MESA -- After a fast start to the match, the Orange Coast College men's soccer team settled for a 1-1 tie with visiting Cypress on Friday at the OCC Soccer Complex.

The Pirates (3-4-3, 1-2-2 in Orange Empire Conference) came out fast as a long pass off the foot of Kyle McNeill reached open field, where it was a race to the ball between OCC's Taylor Kane and Cypress netminder Braydon Welch.

Kane barely beat Welch to the ball and flicked a high, arching shot towards the goal that slipped in under the crossbar, putting Coast up, 1-0, in the 15th minute.

From there, both teams went back and forth in a fairly even matchup between two teams struggling for playoff position.

In the 53rd minute, Coast was called for a hand-ball infraction in the penalty box, giving the Chargers a penalty shot that was scored by Hawe Yonas to even the match.

OCC's goalkeeper, Osiel Porcayo came up with nine saves, while Welch stopped six shots on goal for the Chargers.

The Pirates will return to action on Tuesday at home against Santa Ana College, beginning at 3 p.m.
