Pirates push Rustlers, but come up short

COSTA MESA -- The Orange Coast College men's soccer team played some its best soccer of the season, but the Pirates just could not find the back of the net and suffered a 1-0 Orange Empire Conference loss to visiting Golden West on Tuesday afternoon.

The lone goal of the contest came in the 19th minute when the Rustlers (9-0-4, 5-0-2 in conference) took advantage of an ill-advised foul and scored on a free kick from Ivan Pineda to teammate Andres Guerra, who headed a deflection past OCC goalkeeper Osiel Porcayo.

From there, the Pirates (3-6-3, 1-4-2) settled down and did a nice job of stopping further GWC offense and also, presented a few threats to the Rustlers' defense. In the second half, despite playing into a steady wind, Coast worked itself into a pair of dangerous free kicks as well as four corner kicks, but just could not connect near the goal.

Porcayo finished with seven saves for the Pirates, while the goalie combination of Josue Catarino and Medardo Garcia combined for three saves.

It's been a tough stretch of OEC play for the Pirates, who opened with  a solid 5-1 win over Norco on Sept. 13, but Coast has gone winless since then (0-5-2). OCC will play at Norco to start the second half of conference action on Friday, beginning at 3 p.m. Coast's next home match will be on Tuesday, Oct. 25 against Fullerton, also at 3 p.m.
