COSTA MESA -- Apparently, Mother Nature is not a fan of the Orange Coast College men's soccer program.
Already playing a man short due to a pair of yellow cards, the Pirates fought through 45 minutes into a severe head wind and rain and trailed only 1-0, with the hopes that the second half would find a positive wind direction to negate the 10 vs 11 disadvantage.
Nope.
Instead, the late-afternoon downpour that covered the greater Costa Mesa area also brought with it a complete change of the wind, negating any help as Coast fell to visiting Cypress, 2-0, on a miserable Tuesday afternoon at the OCC Soccer Complex.
In spite of the lack of help from the elements -- and a second ejection called on the Pirates -- the OCC squad played well against the playoff-bound Chargers (9-5-5, 5-3-2 in the Orange Empire Conference). A first-half goal by Fabrizio Arana and a second-half goal by Brayan Justo proved to be enough against a Pirate squad that was a man down for 70 minutes and two men down for 20 minutes.
Both goalkeepers -- Cypress' Alex Felix and OCC's Collin Macha -- earned four saves.
The Pirates will dry off and wrap up the regular season at home against Golden West on Thursday, beginning at 3 p.m.
