
Pirates win nine events at Cerritos Opener
CERRITOS -- It was a first-place free-for-all for the Orange Coast College men's track and field team as the Pirates earned nine top spots at the Cerritos College Opener on Saturday.
Double-winner honors went to thrower Mark Lutke, who earned first-place marks in both the shot put (46-feet, 6-1/4 inches) and the hammer throw (148-11).
Joining Lutke in the double-winner category was Pirate teammate Brendan Clark, who showed off his speed in the 400 meters (49.7 seconds ... only sub-50-second time in the race) and his arm in the javelin throw with a winning toss of 161-2.
It was a 1-2 finish for OCC in the 3,000 as Caden Guardino took the top time with an 8:56.22, with Coast teammate Jacob Fujimoto (9:39.01) placing second.
It was a photo finish in the 200 as Josiah Meggs earned first place with a time of 21.92, just .07 ahead of runner-up Cristian Castro's time of 21.99.
High jumper Jeremiah Wiley went the highest, winning his event with a jump of 6-0 3/4).
In the pole vault, OCC's Owen Campbell topped the field with a winning jump of 12-11 1/2.
Other top-3 performances for the Pirates were turned in by Sean Artest in the discus (2nd, 128-6) and hammer throw (147-2), Josh Miller in the 400 hurdles (2nd, 58.75), Miller in the 60 hurdles (3rd, 9.35), Farhaan Safi in the 800 (3rd, 1:58.75) and OCC's 4x100 relay of Clark, Meggs, Peter Le and Matthew Brown (3rd, 43.61).
OCC will be the host of this week's Orange Empire Conference Invitational, which takes place on Friday, beginning at 10 a.m.
