Pirates' season ends with loss to Vikings

LONG BEACH -- The Orange Coast College men's volleyball team saw its 2013 season come to an end on Tuesday night being swept by Long Beach City College, 25-23, 25-17, 25-22 in a quarterfinal round of the California Community College Athletic Association State Championship.

It was a tough-hitting night for the Pirates (12-7) who managed to earn just a .180 kill percentage, while the Vikings (15-3) came through with a .333 hitting percentage.

Cody Martin led the Pirates with 11 kills and five digs, while Austin Bagby and Johannes Brink each added nine. Brendan Duff dished out 21 assists to go along with four blocks, while Ty Hutchins joined Martin atop the digs list with five.

For the Vikings, Austin Arcala had 13 kills and 11 digs, while Jon Schaefer and Jo'Lon Clark each added 10. Setters Tim Davis and Mai Eteuati combined for 48 assists.

With the win, Long Beach will host Grossmont on Thursday, beginning at 7:30. In the other state semifinal match, Golden West will take on L.A. Pierce at 5 p.m., also at LBCC.

After the Vikings claimed victory in the first two sets, OCC came out strong in the third set, jumping out to a 14-9 lead, thanks in large part to several early LBCC errors.

The Vikings began to chip away at the deficit and used back-to-back kills by Arcala and Clark and an OCC error to even the set at 17.

Coast hung tough and managed to draw even with LBCC at 21 before the Vikings closed the set out with a 4-1 run.
