Pirates cruise to straight-set win over Miramar

COSTA MESA -- The strong play of the Orange Coast College men's volleyball team continued on Wednesday night with a 25-12, 25-19, 25-13 nonconference win over visiting Miramar College.

Jordan Hoppe had 10 kills and three digs for the victorious Pirates (5-1), while Justin Kam added seven kills. Setter Colby Elder notched 21 assists and four digs, while Chris Orem came off the bench and contributed with three kills and three solo blocks.

For the Jets (3-2), Zack Wissing led the offense with eight kills, while Levi Vermeulen chipped in six.

Coast used a 6-0 run to take an early lead away from the Jets as the Pirates took advantage of early mistakes by the guests and led, 9-4. Miramar kept it close until the midway point of the opening set, when OCC ran away from the Jets with a 13-3 run to close the set out.

Another strong start helped give OCC a 17-12 lead, but Miramar used some strong serving by Vermeulen and kills by Wissing and Vee Jay Samson to get to within three at 21-18.

But a pair of kills by Kam and a put-away by Matthew Ujkic helped the Pirates preserve the lead and take the second set, 25-19.

In the third set, the solid play of the Pirates prevented any type of scoring runs by the Jets as OCC carried a commanding 17-6 lead.

Tyler Reindl and Kupua Harrison finished the match strong for the Pirates, each ripping a pair of kills down the stretch.

The Pirates will play at San Diego Mesa College on Friday before returning to the Peterson Gym on Wednesday to host Palomar College. Both matches will begin at 6 p.m.
